What to Expect from Implant-Supported Dentures
Before treatment, a member of our team will complete a dental exam, including digital x-rays, to better understand the strength of your jawbone and gums. If the jawbone or gums are too weak to securely hold the implanted posts, a bone and/or gum graft can be needed. As soon as the area has healed and is sufficiently dense, you can have implant surgery. Your mouth will be numbed with local anesthesia before the procedure. Other sedation options may be discussed if the process will be extensive or if you have dental fears or anxieties. One of our dentists will make incisions in your gums and insert implants in the holes in the jawbone. For dentures, four or more implants are usually used for each arch. The gums will be sutured with part of the implant showing above the gumline. A temporary denture will be used to cover the posts as your mouth heals in the next 4 – 6 months. The implants will integrate with your gums and jawbone. Once our dental team decides that the posts are secure, your custom dentures can be connected to the implants and fitted.
