Root Canal Therapy

We completely understand that the words "root canal" can make people nervous, but we want you to know something important: root canal therapy is not something to fear. At Creating Beautiful Smiles in Racine, WI, our goal is to make this procedure as comfortable as possible, and for most patients it feels no more significant than having a filling placed. In fact, root canal therapy is the treatment that takes away pain rather than causing it.

Root canal therapy is needed when the soft tissue inside a tooth, called the pulp, becomes infected or inflamed. This can happen due to deep decay that has reached the inner chamber of the tooth, a crack or fracture that allows bacteria to enter, or trauma that damages the pulp. When the pulp is compromised, it creates pressure and infection that causes significant pain and, if left untreated, can threaten not only the tooth itself but also the surrounding bone and neighboring teeth.

During root canal therapy, your provider carefully removes the infected or damaged pulp tissue, cleans and shapes the canals inside the root, and seals them to prevent reinfection. The tooth is then restored, most commonly with a crown, to protect it and restore full function. Saving a natural tooth whenever possible is always our preference, and a successfully treated tooth can last a lifetime with proper care.

Before your root canal procedure at Creating Beautiful Smiles, your provider will administer local anesthetic to ensure the area is thoroughly numb. We take the time to make sure you are completely comfortable before we begin, and we encourage you to let us know if you feel anything during the procedure so we can address it right away. Many patients are genuinely surprised by how comfortable the experience is.

The procedure itself involves creating a small opening in the tooth to access the inner chamber, removing the pulp tissue, carefully cleaning and shaping the root canals, and sealing them with a biocompatible material. Depending on the complexity of the case, this may be completed in one appointment or may require a follow-up visit. A temporary filling or crown may be placed in between appointments to protect the tooth.

After your root canal, the area may feel a little tender for a few days as the tissues heal. This discomfort is typically mild and well managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. A permanent restoration, usually a crown, will be placed at a subsequent visit to protect the treated tooth and restore its strength and appearance. With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, your restored tooth can serve you well for many years to come.
