Periodontal (gum) disease is an inflammation in the gums, which can cause serious damage to your oral health. There are three stages of gum disease ranging from mild to severe. The first phase is gingivitis, which is caused by a buildup of plaque under the gumline. Without treatment, gingivitis can develop into the second stage known as periodontitis, which affects the fibers and bone that support your tooth roots. Advanced periodontitis is the final phase of periodontal disease, which may cause teeth to become loose or fall out. To treat periodontal disease, Creating Beautiful Smiles offers both nonsurgical and surgical treatment options, depending on the severity of the disease, such as antibiotics, scaling and root planing, gum grafts, gum surgery, and tooth extraction. If you have signs of gum disease, get in touch with our office in Racine, WI to schedule an examination and consultation with a member of our team.

Your periodontal treatment will be determined by the intensity of the disease. If Dr. Palmer or Dr. Smalkoski diagnoses you with periodontal disease, she will discuss her recommendations for your treatment program. For mild cases, scaling and root planing (SRP) is typically recommended to deep clean the pockets of your gums. In more advanced cases, antibiotics can be taken in addition to multiple scaling and root planing procedures. Severe cases of gum disease will typically need gum surgery, like regenerative (grafting) or pocket reduction.
