What to Expect from Tooth Extractions
Extractions are performed in our office using local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth being removed. Other types of sedation could be used, depending on the extent of the procedure and to help keep you relaxed in case you have some dental anxieties. As soon as you're ready, one of our dentists will start the procedure. For a simple extraction, we will loosen up the tooth using a special device called an elevator before removal. A surgical extraction entails making incisions into your gums to reach the tooth. If necessary, the tooth might be broken up into smaller pieces so it can be removed. When the tooth has been removed, either Dr. Palmer or Dr. Smalkoski will close the incision in your gums. Your dentist may write a prescription for antibiotics that should be taken prior to and following the process — in case you have a current illness, if your immune system is compromised, if the procedure is prolonged, or if you have some other special health problems.
