There are several things that may cause further problems in a tooth after a root canal treatment. In some cases, not all of the diseased areas were eliminated during therapy, and sometimes a new infection may have formed in the tooth. When a tooth exhibits signs of an infection for the second time following an initial root canal therapy, the dental team at Creating Beautiful Smiles may recommend endodontic retreatment. Like the original root canal treatment, endodontic retreatment can be performed in our state-of-the-art Racine, WI facility to clean out the canals of the tooth and eliminate the infection. What Is the Root Canal Retreatment Process?
Your endodontic retreatment will take place in our office with a local anesthetic technique to numb the treated area. If you have dental anxiety about the procedure, sedation dentistry options may also be used. As soon as you are prepared, our doctors will open the tooth and then remove the filling material placed during the former procedure. The inside of the tooth, including the canals of the tooth roots, will be thoroughly disinfected. Once the tooth has been cleaned and disinfected, it will be strengthened with a new filling material and sealed. A new dental restoration (such as a crown) will generally be placed on the treated tooth for protection and strength once it fully heals.
